One of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Mount Abu, the Gaumukh Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The major attraction of this temple is the sacred climb of 700 stairs as it offers both a panoramic view of the surrounding valley and is famous for the religious pilgrimages and meditation throughout the year.
Amidst the thick dense forest, Gaumukh (Cow’s Head) welcomes you with a statue of Nandi alongside idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama and Rishi Vashistha. The mysterious water stream falling from the mouth of the marble bull is dedicated to Nandi, the divine bull of Lord Shiva in the Hindu mythology. Hence, the Gaumukh Temple is popular among both Lord Shiva’s devotees and tourists who want to explore the sacred site of mystery.
The Gaumukh Temple was built as a dedication to Saint Vashishth, who performed a yagna which created the four major Rajput clans. Legend states that the Yagna was performed in order to seek the blessings of gods and goddesses for the safety of the earth. Yagna was performed in the Agni Kund which is one of the main attractions of the temple. Legend of Ramayana tells us that during Ram Vanvas, Ram and Lakshman came to this place to attain Gyan and blessings from Rishi Vashistha who was residing here.
